ROGER "BUCKEY" LEGRIED
January 24, 1938 - September 29, 2011
Funeral services for Roger "Buckey" Legried, 73, of rural Frost were October 4, 2011, at Bethany Lutheran Church, rural Frost. Buckey died at his home September 29, 2011, following a lengthy illness.
Buckey was born January 24, 1938, at rural Frost, the son of Orville and Mildred Legried. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethany and graduated from Frost High School. He attended the University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1961 in Germany with the 97th Signal Corps. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he returned home and began farming. He was united in marriage to Shirley Golias at Mankato on February 12, 1967.
In 1967 he also went into business selling snowmobiles, livestock equipment and feed which became known as Buckey's Sales & Service. He was involved in many community activities including 4-H, Boy Scouts, Faribault County Pork Producers, Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce, Rome Township Board and serving most of his adult life on the Bethany Church Council. He also served as president of the United in Faith Lutheran Parish.
Buckey accomplished many things in his life. Most notable was becoming a Guinness Boo of World Record Holder for the World's Largest Cap Collection on October 6, 2006, with 82,792 caps. He was recertified as the Guinness World Record Holder in 2010 with 100,336 caps. He now has over 109,000 caps in his collection.
In 1986, Buckey was inducted into the Minnesota Swine Honor Roll. He was named "Agri-Business Person of the Year" by the Blue Earth Chamber of Commerce in 1992. In 1997, he was honored as the "Fair Person of the Year" by the Faribault County Fair Board.
Buckey enjoyed making people happy and presented programs for many years in area care centers, rest homes and senior citizen groups with his concertina, caps, jokes and magic. His greatest hobby was his cap collection and playing "Old Time" music on his concertina.
Buckey is survived by one daughter, Karen Phang and husband Sarey of Eagan, MN, sone son, Scott Legried of Frost and a sister, Joyce (Del) Armon of Lakota, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley in 1996, one brother, Dennis, and his parents.
