Memorial services for Melford J. Willmert of Frost who died Sunday, July 15, 2012, will be at 11 am Friday, August 17, 2012, at United Lutheran Church in Frost with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at United Lutheran Cemetery.
Melford J. (Mel) Willmert, 91, was born December 24, 1920, at Frost, the son of Julius and Kristi (Hatlestad) Willmert. He was valdedictorian of the first graduating class of Frost High School in 1938 and was the last surving member of the class. He attended the University of Minnesota and worked in Minneapolis and later California before his marriage to Evelyn H. Heseritz August 20, 1949, at Wood Lake, MN. The couple lived in California where Mel worked for a subsidiary of Sunkist Growers.
In 1956 they moved to Wood Lake where he was in the grocery business. In 1960 they moved to Albert Lea where he worked for Investors Diversified Services. The couple retired to Frost in 1973 where Mel drove a school bus for several years. He was an accomplished singer and sang for many weddings and funerals in the Frost area through the years. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed traveling to Europe, the Western United States and to Alaska.
Melford is survived by his wife, Evelyn Willmert of Frost, his sister, Lorene Campos of Blue Earth and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Ronald and Vernal Willmert and an infant sister.
